Africa wasn’t discovered. It was described. By someone else.

About This Blog

This blog covers African history before, during and after European colonization, plus how those histories connect to Germany specifically. It runs across four areas: African Kingdoms for everything before colonial rule, Colonial History for the colonial period through restitution, African Lives for the people behind these events, and Identity and Belonging for how all of this connects to the present.

Every post draws on two to six sources, read in full rather than skimmed. Modern historians are paraphrased and credited, never quoted out of context. Historical sources are quoted directly only when the wording can be traced to where it was first recorded. Every post carries a section called What Doesn’t Add Up, which names the contradictions and gaps in the record instead of smoothing them over.

If you want the twelve page version of this argument, applied to one specific case, get the free ebook Made in Germany: How Your Picture of Africa Was Manufactured.
