European powers and their colonies in Africa

Colonizer

Germany colonized parts of Africa from 1884 until the end of the First World War. They controlled territories such as German East Africa (now Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda), German South West Africa (now Namibia) and Cameroon.

BELGIUM

Belgium was a late entrant into African colonialism, but controlled the Congo Free State (1885-1908) and later the Belgian Congo (1908-1960).

FRANCE

France began its colonization of Africa in the mid-19th century and maintained control until the 20th century. They controlled territories such as Algeria (1830-1962), Ivory Coast (1842-1960), Senegal (1659-1960) and Madagascar (1897-1960).

GREAT BRITAIN

British rule in Africa began in the 19th century and lasted until the middle of the 20th century. They controlled territories such as Egypt (1882-1952), Sudan (1899-1956), Uganda (1894-1962), Kenya (1895-1963), South Africa (1806-1910) and Nigeria (1901-1960).

PORTUGAL

Portugal was one of the first European powers to colonize Africa and one of the last to give up its colonies. They controlled territories such as Angola (1575-1975) and Mozambique (1498-1975).

ITALY

Italy was a late entrant into African colonialism, but controlled territories such as Eritrea (1890-1941), Italian Somaliland (1889-1960) and Libya (1911-1943).

SPAIN

Spain had smaller colonies in Africa, including Equatorial Guinea (1778-1968) and Western Sahara (1884-1975).
